Diligent Bible Teachers

Diligent in Handling Word of Truth2 Timothy 2:15 is often used to encourage Bible teachers to adequately prepare lessons so they accurately teach God’s Word — a valid application of the verse. Though it doesn’t directly speak to Bible teachers, this verse does deal with the handling of God’s Word, a task that relates to teachers.

If we take a closer look at the verse, we can also draw out six qualities teachers should possess, beginning with diligence.

Do you have diligent, hard-working teachers, who study and do their best?

Notice how various translations begin 2 Timothy 2:15 —

Study to shew thyself (KJV)
Be diligent (NKJV, NASB)
Work hard (NLT)
Do your best (NIV)

Vine’s Expository Dictionary defines the Greek word for this phrase (spoudazo) as “to hasten to do a thing, to exert oneself, endeavour, give diligence.” The word seems to denote a conscientious, persistent effort to do something — diligence.

Questions for Bible Teachers:

  • Do you put effort into your teaching or try to get by with as little work as possible?
  • Do you make teaching a priority, giving it the careful attention it deserves, or does it fall low of the list of things to do?
  • Do you keep at your study until you have a good understanding of God’s Word or are you satisfied with a shallow level of knowledge?

The next post will look at another quality from 2 Timothy 2:15.  — Accountable Bible Teachers

    • Praise God for your desire to become a Sunday School teacher, Larry Valdez. Coming to a site like this is a good step to learn more about teaching.
Let me suggest you take time to learn about Sunday School, specifically at your church. You’ll find some general helps here: Sunday School Resources
Then, make sure you are aware of the age level characteristics of those you will teach. That will affect the kind of environment you seek to develop, the kind of methods you use, and what you do to help motivate them to learn. I encourage you to watch the video at Reach All Age Levels and then read through the articles listed there for the age you will teach.

Growing in your teaching skills is important but so is how you view teaching and the teaching-learning process. Check out these articles:

You’ll find a list of pages with resources for a variety of different teaching skills at: Teacher Training Resources

Above all, seek God’s help. Even the best understanding and skills means little without the wisdom and power of God working in and through you.
