Bible Teaching Needs Divine EmpowermentWhat God’s Word Says about Teaching

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; (Rom. 12:6-7)

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. (1 Pet. 4:10)

Spiritually Gifted to Teach

A spiritual gift is “a special divine empowerment bestowed on each believer by the Holy Spirit.” (Click here to learn more about this definition.) When using our spiritual gifts we are therefore operating according to God’s power.

Implications for Leaders who are Recruiting Bible teachers:

Since God has gifted people to teach, it only makes sense that we would look for people who have spiritual gifts that empower them to teach. While we might think of Bible teachers as those with the spiritual gift of teaching, that is not necessarily the case. Some who teach could have the spiritual gifts of exhortation. Others could have the gift of prophecy. And, some have a combination of these gifts.

People with the spiritual gift of teaching will tend to be more systematic in their approach.

People with the gift of exhortation will tend to be more applicational in their approach.

People with the spiritual gifts of prophecy will tend to be more confrontational in their approach.

The Holy Spirit can impart divine power and use people who are not gifted to teach, but God obviously intends for spiritual gifts to be an indication of where we should serve.

  • Understand the way God has empowered the people you recruit and help them understand it as well.

Implications for Teachers:

  • If God has given you a spiritual gift for teaching, then find some way to use it.
  • If you have been gifted to teach, are you effectively using that gift? – Paul told Timothy to “fan into flame” the gift he had been given (2 Tim. 1:6).
  • If you are teaching but are not so gifted, rely on the Holy Spirit to work through you nonetheless, while seeking to find your best fit in ministry.

    • One of the reasons we need one another in the Body of Christ is because no one person has all the gifts and we can therefore lack balance. We can try to serve with people with different gifting from us to help compensate. When that isn’t possible, we need to work harder at bringing some of that balance. I’ll respond to your question, Sally, by suggesting what people with these different gifts need to be aware of and work on so they are not imbalanced due to gifting — a “con” in their teaching.

      • People with the gift of teaching might need to work more on the application end of the lesson plan.
      • People with the gift of exhortation might need to work more on the study and content of the lesson.
      • People with the gift of prophecy might need to work more on helping people come to their own understanding of truth rather than telling them what they need to know.
  1. please i need some tips on how to be an impartful teacher of the word of God, not just speaking fables and grammer but mightily giving it as of the day of pentecost

    • Oluwafemi, the best tip I can give is to heed the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:5 — “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.” To teach this way, we need to yield all of who we are and all we do in the teaching-learning process to God so that His Spirit is the One at work both in and through us. While we should be skillful and creative as teachers of His Word, it ultimately isn’t about what we do but what the Spirit does through us. Yielding to Him will be evidenced in how much we pray about our teaching and for those we teach … before, during, and after the lesson. It also involves daily walking in the Spirit (Gal. 5). While God does sometimes work in spite of us, we should not presume upon Him to work through us during the lesson if we are not otherwise yielded to Him. How we teach should be a continuation of how we walk the walk with Him, trusting Him for wisdom and strength, doing all to His glory because we love Him and want Him to have first place in all we do.

  2. Hello. I really enjoyed your article. I do believe that i have have a gift of teaching. God has given me a vision, and also a gift of writing. He allows me to write Bible Studies through my own spiritual growth. I have about five or so that i have written and taught. I feel that i need mentoring on how to develop them for publishing and also to be a better speaker. Do you have any ideas for that?

    • Hello, Carla. Praise God that you have been able to identify the spiritual gift of teaching within you. That gift can be used to verbally teach others as well as in writing, such as writing Bible studies. Let me suggest you check out the article, So You Want to Become a Christian Writer!, on our main site. Let me also suggest that you that you check out the list of articles and books under the General tab on this page: Church Communications Resources While all these resources deal more with writing in general as opposed to writing Bible studies, you might still find some help.

As to writing Bible studies or lessons, perhaps you’ll find some help on the Bible Lesson Preparation & Planning Resources page. Also, go to the Curriculum Resources page and scroll down to the workbook listed under Writing Curriculum. That might be of help to you.

As to publishing Bible studies, you might want to get in touch with some of the major curriculum companies to inquire about their requirements and processes. It isn’t easy to break in as a new author but doing that kind of research would give you some ideas of what is involved. You can also self-publish. If you do, be prepared for much work marketing it. One of the benefits of going with a company is that they already have a presence and do most of the marketing.

I hope these thoughts are helpful. I will take time to pray God gives you wisdom and direction in how to pursue this passion.
