As Bible teachers we see our role as communicators<\/a>, teaching the Word. But, even good communicators spend time listening to their students, allowing for two-way interaction, not just one-way transmission of information. To truly listen requires Bible teachers to be attentive — attentive to what students say, but also their tone of voice and non-verbal communication (facial expressions, posture, etc.). A lack of attentiveness sends the wrong message to students.<\/p>\n

Being Attentive to Students Communicates that the Bible Teacher Values Them as Friends<\/h2>\n

To focus on what someone says, especially showing interest in what’s happening in their lives, communicates that the person matters. It makes students believe they are a priority to the teacher.\u00a0 Attentive teachers are perceived as caring teachers.<\/p>\n

When people believe their teacher cares about them, they’ll likely respond by opening up even more. The deeper students go, the greater the likelihood of them dealing with the real issues of their lives as they get below the surface. That’s when healing and growth tend to most transpire (James 5:16).<\/p>\n

Since it begins with teachers being attentive, it’s important for teachers to identify what communicates attentiveness and what doesn’t.<\/p>\n
