Discussion is a Great Method But . . .

Discussion Method and the One Another Commands of Scripture
Discussion Method can be a good starting point for the fulfillment of some of the one another commands of Scripture. A method, however, is only as effective as its successful implementation. Having a good curriculum helps but we can’t rely on it to produce good discussions. How great of a method discussion is may depend on the way we use it and how well we adapt it to fit our particular group of students.

How to Make Discussion a Better Method

Here are four ways to improve in the use of discussion.

1) Facilitate discussion to maximize participation.

We need to help those group members who are passive, belittlers, monopolizers, or distracters so everyone can feel their contribution is valuable. Learn more in this teacher training resource: In Facilitating a Discussion, Everyone’s Contribution is Valuable Worksheet

2) Take students to higher levels.

It’s easy for discussion to remain shallow if merely answering questions. Teachers need to take it to the next level by asking clarifying questions. For help, read: Guiding Questions for Group Discussion

3) Understand how to deal with group dynamics.

4) Vary the format to keep discussion from simply being routine.

Even an effective method used over and over in the same way can lose its impact. Here’s an idea for a teacher training session to help teachers get out of discussion ruts: Discussion Ruts – Teacher Training Session

If through the use of discussion we’re going to teach, encourage, and spur one another on, then we need everyone to participate in ways that go below the surface. We can facilitate such discussion better when we understand how people relate and guard against complacency.
