FAQ About Scripture Memorization

When speaking of Scripture memorization in Bible teaching, we’re referring to the rote learning of Bible verses to the point where they can be recalled and repeated by memory.

Questions about Bible Teachers Using Scripture Memorization

What’s the benefit of rote memorization?

Early in life, many worldly impressions get seared into our minds that keep us from God and doing His will. And so, we read in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” God uses Scripture in the transformation process. When we have an arsenal of verses memorized, we’re prepared to replace worldly thinking with Truth. If we don’t build on a solid and sure foundation, our construct might seem to make sense but is doomed to come crashing down. When temptations come, and they will, we have something to hold onto and wield like a sword (Eph. 6:17), much like Jesus did when He was tempted by Satan (Matt. 4:1-11). Scripture itself provides a great benefit for memorizing it. — “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Ps. 119:11) We’re not always in situations where we can search and study Scripture for the help we need. When we have a number of Bible verses memorized, God’s Spirit will help us recall what is needed.
