Jesus wasn’t just a good teacher. He was even more than a great teacher. He was, and is, the Master Teacher. When we think of the phrase “Master Teacher” perhaps we think of someone who excels as the best teacher from whom we can learn. While that is true about Jesus, “Master” means more than being the best at His trade. John 13:14-15 refers to Him as our “Lord and Teacher”.
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (Jn. 13:14-15)
The Master Teacher as the Lord
We can claim to be people’s teacher but not their Lord. That role belongs only to Jesus. As Lord, He can say, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore …” (Matt. 28:18). We can speak authoritatively based on the truth of God’s Word, but we are not the authority. — He is.
Implication: Point people to the Lord as the One to whom they are accountable. It’s not our place to command people to obey.
Only Jesus can say, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (Jn. 14:6). We can share the plan of salvation and ways of the Father with people. We can build an atmosphere conducive to getting to know Him. But, we can’t save anyone. We can’t cause people to grow (1 Cor. 3:7). — Only He can.
Implication: Teach as more of a conduit or facilitator through whom His power and truth flow. It’s not within our ability to do it apart from Him (Jn. 15:5).
How Jesus Described Himself as Lord and Teacher
