To not only recruit teachers but also retain them, we better learn how to spell affirm. As followers of Jesus, we should learn to do whatever we do as unto the Lord, not people (Col. 3:23) so we shouldn’t “need” affirmation. Bible teachers, however, are human, no matter how spiritually mature they may be, and humans do better when affirmed. Perhaps, it’s the kind of affirmation needed with which we should be concerned.
An Acrostic Spelling the Word Affirm Suggesting the Kind of Affirmation Bible Teachers Need
While the Bible doesn’t specifically tell us to affirm Bible teachers, it does encourage expressions of encouragement that could spell affirm. These expressions will build up rather than puff up teachers.
A – Appreciation
… expressions of gratitude for who they are and what they do
I thank my God every time I remember you. (Phil. 1:3)
We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing. (2 Thess. 1:3)
F – Fellowship
… expressions of value and acceptance of who they are
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. (Rom. 15:5-7)
F – Feedback
… expressions of awareness of how well they do
Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise. (Prov. 15:31)
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. (Prov. 27:17)
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thess. 5:11)
I – Inspiration
… expressions of encouragement to keep going
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds …(Heb. 10:24)
R – Respect
… expressions of consideration of their time, needs, feelings, opinions, etc. (Rom. 12:10; 1 Thess. 5:12)
Show proper respect to everyone … (1 Pet. 2:17)
Honor one another above yourselves.(Rom. 12:10)
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. (1 Thess. 5:12-13)
M – Multiplicity
… expressions of affirmation many times and in many ways
We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. (1 Thess. 1:2)
But encourage one another daily … (Heb. 3:13)
