A Starting Point in Church Safety

Share:

I don’t know how it has been in your area, but just in the past several weeks my local news has reported on a pastor of music at a Baptist church and school being charged with 26 counts of child sex abuse-related crime and a Mennonite School administrator admitting to molesting boys.  — We are not talking about secular organizations, like the Penn State molestation case. These are conservative and evangelical churches and ministries.

Parents of your church need to know their children are safe. While you cannot give a 100% guarantee that no “wolf in sheep’s clothes” will ever infiltrate your church, you can at least promise that you are working to keep their children safe.

Start with These Questions About Church Safety

Think through your answers to the following questions. If you cannot give a wholehearted positive response, pray over what you can/should do.

  1. Are you convinced of the need to take safety measures?

If not, here are some articles to read:

  1. Are you screening children and youth teachers and helpers?
  1. Are you training your teaching staff about safety?

If not, here’s a starting point: Classroom Safety Issues Teacher Training

View positive responses to these questions as a starting point. There’s so much more you can do (i.e., check-in and check-out system, incidence reports, etc.). But, keep in mind that your efforts will only provide a sense of security if you communicate your safety measures to parents.
