The best communicators seek to illustrate because they want to increase understanding. Unless students understand a truth, they will not apply it to life. They need to find the connection, or relevancy, of truth to their lives. That’s where illustrations come in.
How to Illustrate
The best communicators don’t lock themselves into one way to illustrate a lesson. They look for illustrations that best fit the concept and have relevance to their students.

You’ll find a list of ideas for different ways to illustrate lessons in the Bible Teacher’s Role resource which looks at different roles impacting teachers might need to assume in addition to being a communicator.
Where to Get Illustrations
Books can be purchased with illustrations. Or, an Internet search can provide ideas. Here are some to check out:
- Books with Illustrations, Quotes, and Humor
- Books with Children’s Object Lessons
- Sermon Illustrations.com
- Sermon Illustrations at Bible.org
- Sermon Central – sermons, illustrations, dramas
The Bible Teacher’s Role resource also lists a few more ideas for where to get illustrations that may be even better than books and Internet searches.

Such a great informative article. Thank you so much for your dedication in deepening our understanding about how to be more successful in teaching the word of God. Thank you.
You are welcome Efia. God and His Word deserve our best. My prayer is that we would all approach teaching His Word as reflected in 2 Timothy 2:15. — “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
