If we want to reach and teach teenagers, we need to promote an atmosphere of both grace and truth, not legalism, but also not licentiousness. — “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (Jn. 1:17) — Youth thrive in this kind of Christ-like environment because they hear truth but it is presented compassionately.
Acrostic of the Kind of Environment in Which Youth Thrive
If we foster an environment with the following positive traits, they will be more likely to consider the truth they need to hear.
Y – Yes rather than No
Focus on what they can do and what they can be for rather than what they can’t do and what they should be against.
O – Openness to their thoughts rather than suppressing them
Allow them to express their doubts and questions.
U – Understanding of their struggles rather than condemnation
Let them feel accepted even when you can’t condone their behavior.
T – Truthfulness rather than hypocrisy
Be genuine with your students but also encourage authenticity among each other.
H – Harmony rather than discord
Insist on it being a place where everyone can feel safe even if they disagree with one another.
