FAQ About Using Puppets in the Bible Classroom
Puppetry tends to be a favorite Bible teaching method, particularly with younger students.

Questions About Using Puppets as a Bible Teaching Method

Since kids seem to love puppets, isn’t it appropriate to always use them as the teaching method?

While children, and even adults, do tend to enjoy puppets, any teaching method, including puppets, can become less effective as a teaching tool if used excessively or exclusively. Teachers must be careful not to use them as a crutch, primarily communicating through the use of puppets instead of personally interacting with students. Puppets are not the teachers. We must guard against using puppets as a substitute for a more strategic or purposeful methodology. Learning is the goal, not entertainment.

Is it possible for puppets to become a distraction?

Yes. If the teacher hasn’t learned the effective use of puppets, the lack of coordination or clumsiness in using the puppet could be distracting. While classroom use of puppets isn’t about a major production, teachers should still acquire some basic skills in their use. Also, since puppets should be used to complement or enhance the lesson, if they aren’t fulfilling that purpose, their use might actually be detracting from the learning experience.
