Downtime Doesn’t Have to Mean No Training

Share:

We sometimes face downtimes in the church when our teaching ministry slows down or is temporarily suspended. Summer tends to be one of those times but for some churches these kinds of decisions must be made in light of current events.

Use Downtime for Self-Study Teacher Training

If you can’t gather your Bible teachers together for a training seminar, it doesn’t mean you can’t provide training. Check out the list of different ways to provide teacher training at: In a Teacher Training Rut?

Though you may not be able to use the means that require large group or even one-on-one meeting, there are ways to adapt even some of those means through the use of technology. But, consider using this time as an opportunity to do training in ways not normally used. Ministry Tools Resource Center can provide an economical source for the following dowloadable resources that can be used for self-study:

(Though these resources may not be put on your church website, you do have permission to e-mail the files -PDFs- to your teachers.)

Tips for Self-Study Training

  1. Try to choose topics relevant to the needs of the individual teachers. That will help with motivation.
  1. Plan follow-up for questions and feedback, letting them know you will be contacting them at a given point. That will provide some accountability.

Also, keep the line of communication open during downtime to encourage and support them personally, not just in their teaching capacity. That will let them know you care.

As Conduits, Depend on God

Share:

Teachers who view God as the One who truly meets needs, view themselves as conduits through whom His Spirit works. They are not the Source for change and growth in their students’ live but rather God. Consequently, they depend on God to work both in and through them.

Conduits Depend on Godfor it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (Phil. 2:13)

  • Pray that teachers see themselves as conduits of God’s grace and truth.
  • Pray that teachers understand the role of the Holy Spirit in helping students understand truth.
  • Pray that teachers depend on God as the real force behind changed lives (1 Cor. 3:6-7).

The Praying for Bible Teachers Throughout the Year resource contains prayer guides for each month. The theme for the month begins with the letter of that month to make it easier to remember how to pray that month even without the guide in hand. For example, the D in December can stand for Dependence on God, which is what teachers need to be effective.

God as the One Who Meets Needs

Share:

Sometimes as Bible teachers we can get to thinking that we need to “fix” people’s problems. Yes, God might use us to help people but our objective should be pointing people to the Lord as their Shepherd, the Lord as the Source of all they need. People must learn to rely on the Lord, not us. He’s the One they can ALWAYS turn to. He’s the One CONSTANTLY aware of their needs. He’s the One who is FULLY capable of meeting their needs.

Pray Bible Teachers Point to God as the One Who Meets Needs

Some of the prayer requests in the Praying for Bible Teachers Throughout the Year for November, which emphasizes praying about Needs, are to this end.

Pray Bible Teachers Point to God as the One to Meet Needs
The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing. (Ps. 23:1)

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:19)

  • Ask God to help teachers remember to keep pointing students to God as their provider, protector, and guide.
  • Pray that teachers keep falling back on the sufficiency of God’s grace (2 Cor. 9:8; 12:9).
  • Pray that when needs are met, God is glorified (2 Cor. 9:12).

Group Training Session for All Bible Teachers?

Share:

Too often we train teachers in a large group session because we’re in a training rut or because it seems more convenient to cover everyone at once. But, if we aren’t careful, for some it could be a waste of time if not relevant to the age they teach or the setting in which they teach.

Tips for Having All Bible Teachers in One Group Training Session

If you must include all teachers in the same session, pay particular attention to the first tip below and where possible, follow the second tip as well.

  1. Think broad. – What topics relate to teachers of all age groups or in any setting?
  1. Use break out groups based on setting or age taught after presenting broad content. – How does this content specifically apply to each teacher’s particular situation?
