When I went to Bible college, students were given a quota of how many people we had to witness to in a set period of time. Having a requirement forced us to do outreach whereas we might have remained secluded in the academic and social life of being a college student.
Sometimes we people do need a little push to get us out of our shells. Sadly, though, too many of the people we witnessed to probably weren’t prepared and neither were we. Too often we went out in the flesh with the objective of reaching our quota.
Disciple-Making Objective to Help Students with Outreach
Certainly it isn’t wrong for teachers to set goals to help students reach out, especially in response to a lesson series on outreach. Teachers, however, need to set higher goals for students than merely applying their newly learned witnessing skills. Disciple-making teachers help students understand these objectives as well:
1) To develop a reliance on the Holy Spirit to work in and through them as they witness — the right power source
2) To develop a heart of love for people that does not want to see them spend eternity without Jesus — a proper motivation
3) To develop a habit of praying for God to open doors and prepare people’s hearts for the Gospel — the readiness factor
