To provide Bible teachers with curriculum and expect them to effectively teach without providing training on how to teach the Bible not only is a disservice to the teachers but also to the students and ultimately the glory of God.
Why Training on Bible Teaching Skills is Needed
Bible teachers need to have a sense of accountability both for what they teach and how they teach it.
Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. (James 3:1)
Bible teachers need to know how to prepare a lesson so they accurately present truth to students.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Tim. 2:15)
Bible teachers need to teach in ways that glorify God.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Cor. 10:31)
Training Needed to Help with a Variety of Topics
Much more goes into Bible teaching than following a lesson plan. Bible teachers need training on a variety of teaching skills. A good curriculum might include some age level tips or how to implement the teaching methods or visual aids used in the lesson. But what about the following? (Clicking on the following links will take you to pages with resources on these topics.)
- building relationships with students
- showing God’s love to students
- helping students in crisis
- relying on the Holy Spirit
- tweaking the curriculum to fit their needs
- motivating indifferent students
- classroom safety
- classroom discipline
- including students with special needs
- etc.
Tailor Training to the Needs of Your Teachers
Teachers will be at different places in their teaching skills both in terms of their level of mastery and particular skills needing to be enriched. A teacher training plan that looks at individual teacher needs and tailors training to them, will be most effective.
Both the topics and means of training should be tailored to your teachers. Sometimes a training seminar would be helpful. Other times you might use workbooks. Sometimes a simple worksheet on a specific teaching skill would suffice. For ideas, go to: Bible Teachers Training Resources
